In keeping with the Trust's mission to be a steward of Somerset County’s historical properties, our goal is to restore the house and use it as the Trust’s headquarters to provide office facilities and meeting space.
We have set up an infrastructure committee, an interiors committee and a fundraising committee. Please consider joining one of these committees. If you’re interested, email us at somersethtrust@gmail.com.
We’re also looking for creative minds to help us with fundraising. We’re brainstorming to come up with events that will not only raise money but be a lot of fun.
Tell your friends and neighbors about our Project and encourage them to visit our website or share on Facebook.
Yes, we need your financial support!
While we plan to apply for grants, we won’t be able to complete this project without your generous gifts.
As you plan your end-of-year giving, we hope you’ll consider a gift to the Trust for the South Gate House project.
We’ve already received a few important gifts from members who are making the Trust beneficiaries of qualified charitable distributions (QCD) from their retirement accounts.
This makes tax-free what would otherwise be a taxable distribution from an IRA if paid directly to a charity, and is a useful tax-saving device for those who do not itemize deductions. Note: Only those over age 70.5 are able to take advantage of the QCD benefit.
As you think about year end tax planning, check with your tax professional if making a gift via a QCD makes sense for you.
Littleton Dennis Teackle built the house and its matching across-the-street neighbor as servants’ quarters and to mark the entrance to the Teackle Mansion estate. They were also thought to have served as gate houses at one point, and as such, we are calling our newest project the South Gate House.
After Mr. Teackle’s death in 1848, the entire estate was divided and sold off to private owners. The South Gate House changed hands through many owners and had numerous additions and renovations primarily on the south and west portions of the house.
After many months of negotiation, the Trust finalized the purchase of the property on July 17, 2024.
