The Somerset County Historical Trust works to preserve unique, historically-significant properties and promote the historic heritage of Somerset County on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Our architectural treasures help to tell the stories of our past, our place, and our people.
The Teackle Letter Project
A large collection of original letters of Elizabeth Upshur Teackle (wife of Littleton Dennis Teackle) are housed at the Alderman Library at the University of Virginia. This letter collection constitutes one of the largest personal letter assemblages on the Eastern Shore associated with a prominent historic property open to the public on a regular basis.
There are 64 letters dating from 1800 through 1825 when Mrs. Teackle lived at "Teackletonia" as the estate in Princess Anne was known, and a second group of 101 letters from 1826 to 1836.
The Somerset County Historical Trust, in cooperation with the Somerset County Historical Society, is currently focused on obtaining funding to complete the transcription and publication of this letter collection in My Life at Teackletonia and Beyond: The Letters of Elizabeth Upshur Teackle.
