The Teackle South Gate House

Construction History

Currently, the South Gate House consists of six sections as shown in this diagram.  For orientation, Section 5 is the front entrance of the house facing north onto Prince William Street, and Section 6 is at the back of property facing south.

The Somerset County Historical Property Archive (SCHPA) has 63 pages of notes about the property  compiled by Paul Touart in 1986.  Find the SCHPA info at https://schtrust.org/search-the-schpa and search for property number S-95.

The Trust’s infrastructure committee has located historic maps showing the footprint of the evolving structure (1877, 1899, 1904, 1911, 1923, 1940, and 1970). All of those resources have been helpful in our research on the property’s history and its owners, but our research is ongoing and the information may be subject to change.

Recently we crawled under Sections 1 and 2 and were able to learn more about the structure and its foundation.

Section 1

This 2-story section was built in 1805.

  • It has a north-south gable roof and the original cedar roof singles remain under a modern asphalt shingle roof.
  • All of the original windows were probably 6-over-6 double hung windows. However, the original two front windows facing Prince William Street were replaced with much larger 2-over-2 double hung windows sometime in the mid-1800s.
  • This section has a fireplace on the 1st floor rear wall and a matching fireplace above it on the 2nd floor.

Section 2

This 2-story section was built about 1850.  The bay window additions are labeled as Section 4.

  • It also has a north-south gable roof, and the original cedar roof shingles remain under a modern asphalt shingle roof. Its gable roof ridge line is about 1-foot below that of Section 1, which makes this roof section independent. The floor elevations also sit below that of Section 1.
  • Its attic was originally plastered, indicating that it was likely used as a bedroom with a ladder access.
  • This section has two fireplaces on the 1st floor and one fireplace on the 2nd floor.
  • We are currently evaluating whether to add two full modern bathrooms to this section as we renovate.

Section 3

This 2-story section was built about 1870.

  • Its north elevation has a peak attic roof with a window.. This peak attic roof style was very popular in many Somerset County homes built between 1825 and 1903. The east-west gable ridge line intersects with the north-south gable ridge line of section 2 to form a cross-gable roof.
  • In roughly the 1990’s, a modern bathroom was added in this section on the 1st floor with a ceramic-tiled shower and piping for a toilet and sink, which were never installed.
  • This section has a separate chimney with a small fireplace on the 1st floor.
  • This section previously had major termite damage which has caused a 6-inch downward slop on the 2nd floor towards the west exterior wall.
  • We are currently evaluating whether to install a new kitchen on the 1st floor of this section, and re-leveling the 6-inch floor slope.

Section 4

This section consists of a 3-foot extension beyond the original east exterior wall of Section 2, where triple bay windows were added on both the 1st and 2nd floors.

  • An east-facing gable was then added above the triple bay windows that intersects the north-south ridge line of Section 2 to form a cross-gable roof design.
  • In the attic, there are remains of the original Section 2 cedar roof, reflecting that Section 4 was built much later than Section 2.
  • The floor boards on both the 1st and 2nd floors are much narrower than the Section 2 floor boards, also reflecting that Section 4 was built much later than Section 2.

Section 5

This is a modest front porch over the entrance door. The columns and railings have had some structural deterioration that will need to be repaired.

Section 6

This 2-story section at the back was built about 1950.

  • It has a north-south gable roof with a ridge line that matches section 2.
  • This section has the only full bathroom in the house.
  • There is significant termite damage and its exterior is covered with asbestos shingles.
  • Due to those issues, we might decide to demolish this section and return the remaining structure to its more original configuration.
