SUMPTER CHALLENGE TO SUPPORT THE GATE HOUSE

In 2025, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Warner Sumpter generously established a matching gift of $5,000 on behalf of the Gate House project. Help us get that match before the end of the year when the challenge expires!

VOICES OF THE EASTERN SHORE LETTER PROJECT

Starting with transcription of Elizabeth Teackle's personal letters, the Voices project is now a digital archive of thousands of letters and documents related to the history of the Eastern Shore.  Additional funding is needed to continue to support and expand the project.

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

tax planning strategies

As you think about year end tax planning, check with your tax professional about making a gift via a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your retirement account.

This makes tax-free what would otherwise be a taxable distribution from an IRA if paid directly to a charity, and is a useful tax-saving device. the QCD counts towards the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and is not taxed, which means that the tax on the required distribution is reduced.

OR IS THIS TEXT BETTER?

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ years old or older to donate up to $108,000 total to one or more charities directly from a taxable IRA instead of taking their required minimum distributions. As a result, donors may avoid being pushed into higher income tax brackets and prevent phaseouts of other tax deductions, though there are some other limitations.

A QCD is an election to make a direct distribution from your IRA to a qualified charity.

  • It is a strategy that has become more useful after the standard deduction increased substantially in 2017, making itemized deductions a thing of the past for most taxpayers.

The benefit of a QCD is the exclusion of the distribution amount from adjusted gross income (AGI).

  • By reducing AGI, QCDs can help taxpayers at both ends of the income spectrum to reduce taxes. AGI is the basis for various tax calculations including the taxable portion of social security benefits and the income level where capital gains have zero tax.
  • For high income taxpayers, AGI is used to calculate the net investment income surtax and income-based Medicare premiums.

Even for those who continue to itemize deductions, recent legislation will disallow a portion of total charitable contribution deduction beginning in 2026.

A taxpayer who is 70.5 or older can make a QCD of up to $108,000 in 2025.

  • If the RMD has already been taken, it cannot be undone and replaced by a QCD.
  • The transfer must go directly from the traditional IRA custodian to the qualified public charity (no donor advised funds, no private foundations).
  • The check must clear the charity’s bank by December 31, so a little forethought is helpful. this item.

The 1099-R issued by the custodian will NOT reflect the QCD, so to report the exclusion on your tax return, the QCD portion of a required minimum distribution must be specially coded by the taxpayer or tax preparer.

Only those over age 70.5 are able to take advantage of the QCD benefit.

Your support helps the Somerset County Historical Trust achieve its goals to protect those valuable links to the past—buildings, towns and landscapes—that make this county Somerset.
