The Somerset County Historical Trust was created in 1969 as a county advisory organization under the Maryland Historical Trust. We have participated in various state and federal preservation programs, and advise and assist local preservationists in individual projects. Our legal incorporation allows us to receive and purchase properties and to administer financial gifts in the interest of historic preservation.
Since 1983 the Trust has administered over three quarters of a million dollars in grants, loans and matches for preservation work and has assisted other nonprofit groups on the Lower Eastern Shore.
The Trust has also nominated hundreds of sites, districts, and houses to the National Register of Historic Places, thereby providing a measure of protection to these valuable resources.
The Trust is currently focused on identifying, listing, and monitoring significant intact and endangered historic properties in Somerset County. Our purpose is to create public awareness of the extent of heritage loss and of ways we can preserve these precious assets.

Each of our members can participate by reporting on available historic properties or endangered properties in their area by contacting the Trust. To the extent that property owners agree, we will publish our findings on our website, newsletter and other methods of communication.

The Trust is uniquely positioned to provide expert advice to those interested in restoring valuable historic properties. The combined knowledge and experience of our members is a valuable, if little-tapped, resource for the community as a whole.
We have developed a directory of contractors, tradespersons, material resources, architectural historians, appraisers and realtors available to those in need of services. Along with our annual meeting and planned educational lectures, the directory will serve as a platform and portal for gathering and disseminating information. All members will be able to contribute and comment by contacting the Trust.

The wealth and magnitude of valuable historic properties within Somerset County is not well known outside our area, despite the fact that Somerset boasts the largest number of National Registered sites per capita in Maryland.
The economics of our region place us in a unique position to attract investors who share in our interests or who hope to own a living piece of history. To place Somerset's historical wealth on a larger stage, we are establishing robust relationships with local and national real estate professionals and advertisers.
Gale Yerges
Few among us become legends in their own time, but Gale Yerges was one. Gayle passed away in 2019. As a central spirit and guide for hundreds of like-minded advocates for history, she leaves a void which we must somehow fill.
Gale and Howard Yerges moved to Princess Anne from St Louis Missouri in 1981, and purchased historic Hollyhurst on the Manokin River. Gale quickly learned that Somerset County is rich in historic buildings and heritage. She immediately joined the Somerset County Historical Trust, and was elected chairman in February 1982, a position she held until her death.
It did not take the state of Maryland long to discover her talents, and Governor Harry Hughes appointed Gale to the Maryland Historical Trust in 1985 to represent Somerset, Worcester and Wicomico Counties. She was continually reappointed to the 4-year trustee term by subsequent governors, and ultimately served five different governors in that capacity.
In 1998, Gale joined the board of the Friends of Teackle Mansion and was elected its president in 2000. She has served countless hours on many boards, exhibiting passion and dedication to historic preservation and demonstrating leadership and commitment to completing projects that have a lasting effect on the town, the county and the state, and most importantly, on future generations.
